斯巴達是古代希臘最強大的城邦之一，實力僅次於希臘，這兩大城邦之間經常發生戰爭，斯巴達擁有強大的軍事科技和英勇善戰的斯巴達戰士，因此斯巴達成為戰爭遊戲的常客，在今年的E3大展上，IMC公司展示了氣勢磅礡「古代戰爭」系列的第一部《斯巴達：古代戰爭》（Sparta：AncientWars，後文簡稱SAW），IMC公司自豪地認為「古代戰爭」系列完全可以與「全面戰爭」系列抗衡。
三大戰役、三十個關卡
在古代，富饒的的地中海沿岸成為了各國的必爭之地，希臘人、斯巴達人、波斯人為此不斷爆發戰爭，SAW正是描述這三個種族之間所造成的衝突、戰爭，遊戲內容也根據地理位置的不同而劃分成三個部分，分別為希臘希臘戰役、波斯戰役和斯巴達戰役，每個戰役包含了12-14個關卡，一個完整的主線劇情將這些關卡很好地銜接在一起，而一些突發事件也會頻繁地出現在每個關卡中，它們並不會對劇情造成影響，只是會影響玩家在遊戲中的進程，如果你選擇了不恰當的決定，那你的軍隊將面臨更多的困難，更艱巨的挑戰。遊戲中所有的關卡都是根據真實歷史設計而成，而這些關卡的內容也相當豐富，它包括了外交、保衛、圍剿、經濟挑戰和海戰等多種類型的方式，玩家玩起來絕對不會有任何的枯燥感。
真實戰爭的體現
為了突出戰爭的真實性，SAW採用了自行研發的AWE引擎，這是一個專為即時戰略遊戲設計、具有革命性的物理引擎，將遊戲畫面提升到了一個新的高度，遊戲中的每個單位包括建築、環境、樹、岩石、水、篝火等都採用了即時演算模擬真實場景效果，比如人被象騎兵踢出視野範圍的動作變化、樹受到槍擊會微微震顫、農民受到石頭攻擊人會後仰甚至根據情況的不同會出現死亡、建築物會根據受到攻擊的強弱出現多種倒塌方式等，引擎在遊戲細節方面的表現同樣不容忽視，比如風刮過樹葉會慢慢飄落、水在衝擊岩石等障礙物時會產生水花飛濺等，單位在戰鬥時不同的受傷程度也會即時表現，倒下的屍體不會消失，這些都大大增強了遊戲的真實性。
真實戰爭的模擬
AWE引擎的強大不僅體現在表面上，它還能運用在兵學策略上，例如彈道反彈，控制投石器向建築物發射導彈，不僅會對建築物造成傷害，建築物散碎的石塊會給周圍的單位造成傷害；風向系統，當一個農場燃燒起來後，火勢會隨著風向而改變，附近的一些建築物也會遭殃，玩家可根據這些特性來制定相應的策略。憑藉著這個強大的引擎，所有單位、建築物和環境都具有其相應的物理特性，並且可以彼此互動，例如一艘船有8個空位，如果滿載划船人數，船速講會穩步提升，但是攻擊力相對較弱，如果額外搭載了弓箭手，則可以使用遠程攻擊對敵方造成強大的傷害，不僅可以攻沉地方的船隻，在港口爭奪戰中也會起到舉足輕重的作用，但這些遠程攻擊的單位在被近身後是相當脆弱的。
真實戰爭的理解
在遊戲中，你會發現城牆上都佈滿了守衛，這是設計師對真實戰爭的一種理解，他們認為建造一個防禦塔，在裡面放置幾個射手是遠遠不夠的，真實的防禦應該從城牆開始，那裡往往是突破口，也是攻城戰最激烈的位置，因此遊戲中的城牆並不是一堵普通的城牆，城牆頂端的任何位置都可以派遣射手進行守衛。為了體現更真實的戰爭，遊戲並沒有士兵數量的設定，只要玩家擁有足夠多的資源就可生產出無限的士兵，設計師認為真實的戰爭就是人多欺負人少，只有數量存在差異性才能夠讓處於劣勢的一方採取合理的戰術來應付，這個設定也要求玩家必須合理控制資源和利用資源，遊戲中還有很多設定與平常的即時戰略有所不同，，不管這些設定是否合理，但它們都是設計師們對戰爭的理解，目的就是為了呈現一個真實的戰爭。另外，雖然遊戲中不存在英雄角色，但士兵存在等級系統，能夠在戰場中存活的士兵就是精英，他們的數據肯定要與普通士兵有所區別，所有士兵分為三個等級，輕型、中型和重型，士兵的武器也具有多樣化，玩家可為士兵們選擇武器，如斧頭、刀劍、弓箭等等，讓戰場變得更具有層次感。
